The design objective for the primary bedroom was to create a true sanctuary—a space where you walk in and just exhale. Serene, comfortable, and luxurious were all adjectives we discussed when approaching the design. We wanted to create a room that felt calm and soothing without being boring, which can be a challenge when you’re working with all neutral tones. In order to achieve this, we had to adopt a texturally rich approach with subtle contrasts. You don’t need color to make something interesting—you just need the right materials.
When selecting the textiles, softness was key. The carpet has this subtle depth, and all the fabrics—whether it’s the bedding or the drapery—have just enough variation to make you want to reach out and touch them.
Creating contrast was also important so the room didn’t feel too washed out. We reintroduced rosewood paneling on the fireplace wall. It’s used in other parts of the house, so repeating it here ties everything together. The dark rich tones of the rosewood are balanced with ivory and cream fabrics keeping the room from feeling too heavy. The bed is a good example—it’s got that contrast between the warm wood frame and the soft, ivory upholstery. I like how it brings together masculine and feminine elements in a way that feels balanced, not forced.
